The historic photo from the 1970 Oscars that continues to generate discussion…

Ouadie RhabbouronAugust 6, 2026

What’s interesting is that in 1970 this photo wasn’t on a global front page or cause the stir it generates today. For many, it went unnoticed. It was only with time, when the past was revisited with fresh eyes, that its true significance was understood. Social media, documentaries, and current debates on diversity have brought this image back into the spotlight and transformed it into a symbol of what it meant to break through in a system not designed to include them.

Diahann Carroll, for example, not only shone in film but also on television, becoming one of the first Black women to star in a dramatic series without playing a subordinate role. Cicely Tyson, for her part, was always extremely selective with her roles, refusing to portray characters that reinforced harmful stereotypes. That consistency, that ethical code, is also present in the photo, even if it’s not immediately apparent.

Harry Belafonte, in addition to being an artist, was a tireless activist. He used his fame as a tool to support the civil rights movement, fund causes, and give a voice to the voiceless. Seeing him there, elegant and serene, serves as a reminder that many of the cultural advances of that era were deeply connected to broader social struggles.

The photo also invites reflection on what it meant to “belong” to Hollywood back then. Being at the Oscars didn’t guarantee equality. Many of them continued to face discrimination, unequal contracts, and a lack of recognition. Yet, that night they were together, occupying a space that had been denied them for decades. And that, though it may seem symbolic, carries enormous weight.
