The historic photo from the 1970 Oscars that continues to generate discussion…

Ouadie RhabbouronAugust 6, 2026

To understand why this photo remains so widely discussed more than half a century later, it’s essential to consider the context. The late 1960s and early 1970s were turbulent times in the United States. The Civil Rights Movement had shaken consciences, the streets were filled with protests, and the entire country was questioning old power structures. Hollywood, though sometimes pretending to live in a glamorous bubble, was not isolated from this reality.

For years, Black actors and actresses had been relegated to secondary, stereotypical, or simply invisible roles. Maids, servants, characters without depth. The talent existed, but the opportunities were minimal. Therefore, seeing figures like Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, Diahann Carroll, and Cicely Tyson together in that space was no small matter. It was, in itself, a statement of presence.

Sidney Poitier had already made history a few years earlier by becoming the first Black man to win the Oscar for Best Actor. But even with that achievement, the path didn’t automatically become easier. Many studies still saw it as an exception, not as the beginning of real change. Even so, his figure represented a crack in the wall, living proof that talent has no color.

The photograph was taken during the Governors Ball, the celebration following the ceremony. Far from the rehearsed speeches, there’s a more relaxed, more human atmosphere. And perhaps that’s why the image is so powerful. There are no forced poses or exaggerated smiles. There’s camaraderie, quiet pride, and a clear sense of “we’re here, and we’re here to stay.”
